I can hear either clipping or a bit too much distortion at the drop. Also, I think more bass and a couple more instruments could make the drop work, as it sounds more like a distorted lead with a bit of pitch bending. If you do those things, this piece could work :)

DJ-Zyzyx responds:

I'm not good at making leads from scratch, so I usually just take Logic's software instruments and bend them to my will. I still don't know how to make a lead like Tobu... xD

I don't know about these instruments. They're all doing their own thing at the same time, which creates a crowded, messy feel. Maybe have a melody and some instruments doing harmony, but make sure you don't have a bunch of separate melodies going on at the same time. Also, for the drop, one way to make it more powerful is to add more bass. You also may want to add a few more synths doing the melody and some subtle harmonies. Again, make sure you only have one melody happening at a time. Counter-melodies and harmonies would make everything in this sound more saturated without being cramped. Also, you might want to compress the drums a bit more, as they're hard to hear at some parts. Another thing to try is mixing a bit more. I feel like some instruments are just as strong as the lead, which makes the song confusing in a sense. One other thing I don't really like about this song is the transitions. They seem to just cut out every time you want to switch the melody. Everything should flow together without having to make everything fade out to transition.

Mostly what you need to improve on are your melodies. Don't have too many things going at once or else it will give it a crowded feel. One thing I recommend you do is listen to Tobu's music (because this is tagged as Tobu) and try and break down what he does. Try and pick out how all of his melodies fit together.

Remember not to rush your tracks. Take your time and make sure they are the best you can make them before releasing them. Rushed tracks most often get bad reviews, so just try to spend as much time as you can on your tracks. It takes me weeks to come up with a melody that I think is good enough to make into a song.

Sorry if this review was a bit harsh, but you won't feel the need to improve if you're getting compliments on things that aren't very well executed. Keep working at music production, though. Try to listen to more music of the style you want to create and break it down more technically. Listen to it as many times as you need to until you have the song structure broken down. Just make sure when you're making a song it's not copying someone. Always add your own twist on the genre that really makes the song your own. Think of it as a music producer's trademark. There are a few other things you could do better, but I think this is a good start. If you improve on these things, I see potential.

(One other thing you might try is switching up the genres you're producing. Try something like an electro house or progressive house song. Maybe even go out of the house genre completely.)

DJ-Zyzyx responds:

Thanks for the honest review! I'll definitely take that into account when I make songs. Toby is one of my favorite music artists, I try to break down each one of his songs. They are really simple but I can't seem to make anything like it... XD

There are quite a few things with this remix that I don't like. One is that the synth that comes in at about 0:14 is off key. At least it sounds like it is. Also, the instruments could fit together better. The samples also sound kind of cheap, but that's understandable if you can't afford nice sounding samples. It's mostly just that one off key pattern. I can't really tell if it's off key or not, but from what I'm hearing, it sounds a note or two off.

DJ-Zyzyx responds:

It probably is off key lol. Even though it's on the same line in the MIDI grid it does sound a bit off key.

Kinda sounds like Tobu & Itro - Magic... Actually, it sounds like a few segments were taken from it and pieced together. Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed. I like original melodies way better than very, very similar ones.

JoarZ responds:

Oh okey, but though I never intended making a song that sounded like tobu and itro...

The samples sound a bit generic. Maybe try using different soundpacks for the drum samples or just picking different ones in the pack you're using. Otherwise, it's a pretty good song. Congratulations with graduating!

DavZRazorblades responds:

Thank you! I will add better drum samples next time!

Definitely one of my favorites. You inspire me to make music. Keep up the great work!

Quick question (I know I ask a lot of these XD). What is the yell sound at about 1:01? Thanks.

JoarZ responds:

You can easily get them from Vengeance banks which you can get for free if you search for it. :)

Not sure how well this fits into the "ballad" category, but okay.

NeostarMusic responds:

The tempo and tune is a slightly altered ballad type.
